Actress Rebecca Gayheart was originally cast in the role of Inara, but was quickly replaced by Morena Baccarin because she didn't fit in with the cast dynamic.

Four major players in Firefly have had guest starring roles on Joss Whedon's other shows:
- Nathan Fillion (Mal) played Caleb, an evil, mysogynistic consort of the First Evil, in the final season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
- Gina Torres (Zoe) portrayed Jasmine, a false messiah born from Cordelia who brought peace and love to the masses through mind control, in the fourth season of Angel.
- Adam Baldwin (Jayne) appeared in several episodes of the fifth season of Angel as Marcus Hamilton, liason to the senior parters of Wolfram & Hart.
- Summer Glau (River) played a ballerina in the season three Angel episode, "Waiting in the Wings," before being cast for Firefly. It was her first professional acting job.

Four actors have appeared on all three of Joss Whedon's shows: Firefly, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Angel:
- Andy Umberger (Dortmunder Captain in "Serenity") played D'Hoffryn (recurring) on BtVS and Dr. Ronald Meltzer ("I Fall to Pieces") on Angel.
- Carlos Jacott (Lawrence Dobson in "Serenity") played Ken ("Anne") on BtVS and Richard ("Bachelor Party") on Angel.
- Jonathan Woodward (Tracey in "The Message") played Holden Webster ("Conversations With Dead People") on BtVS and Knox (recurring) on Angel.
- Jeff Ricketts (Blue Glove #1 in "The Train Job") played Weatherby, part of the Watchers Council's bumbling retrieval team, on BtVS and Angel. He also played the spider demon in the Angel episode "Sacrifice."

The costumes for the alliance soldiers were made from the costumes used for the 1997 movie Starship Troopers.

Approximately 16 minutes into the 2003 mini-series Battlestar Galactica, Serenity is seen flying overhead. The visual effects team at Zoic Studios created the effects for both Firefly and the mini-series.
